Layton Morris and his brother Mike grew up not knowing what it would be like to live in a normal home. With no running water or electricity in their home, no parents around to protect them, they quickly learned how to survive and depend only on each other.

When a tragic accident takes Mike away from Layton, and the only other person that he ever let into his heart walked away from him, leaving his heart shattered, Layton focuses all of his time and energy into the ranch he and his brother dreamed of. He makes a vow to himself to never let love in again. The last thing Layton needed or wanted was more heartache.

Whitley Reynolds grew up in a privileged home in upstate New York. When she landed the star football player in high school no one was surprised, not even Whitley. She dreamed of a life with Roger living in New York City and happily followed him there.

The first time Roger hit her for arguing with him about a dinner party, she forgave him. The more it happened, the further Whitley withdrew from her friends and family. One fateful day things go to far. Whitley makes a promise to herself and finds the courage to do the one thing she thought she'd never be able to do.

Fleeing with her best friend Courtney, Whitley was determined to put her past behind her and start a new life in the small town of Llano, Texas, where no one would ever find out about her past.

Will they both ever learn to trust and love again, or will their pasts come back to haunt them, keeping them both alone and…

Terrible story! The execution of the writing sucked. I can’t pity or feel bad for a girl who allows herself to be hit!! I can’t respect a woman who stays with an abusive husband. I can’t stand a girl who makes excuses for their significant other hitting her. I can’t believe how a girl would forgive her significant other for beating them. I can’t respect any part of this book!!

Sweet romance with city girl meets country boy and exes involved. Nice change for romance readers.
  • Amazing book!!

Omg, I’m not someone who likes to read. To be honest, I have never finished a book until now! My sister told me about this book and on a Friday night I was like “let’s give it a try” I started to read around 9:30pm and I literally had to put my phone down and make myself go to sleep around 2am. It was so good that I never wanted to stop! My husband woke up like 3 times to ask me what I was doing, I just couldn’t stop. Thanks for this amazing experience and I’m definitely reading the other ones!
  • I’m all “Winked” Out!

This is a story that describes one of society’s deeply rooted issues with some realistic symptoms, but sugar-coated the solutions, the problem of domestic violence. Yes, people blame themselves and wonder what they did to provoke the abuse, but falling “madly in love” with someone is never the panacea. It takes years to heal with therapy and I feel this book made the solution way too simplistic. I also found the “added a wink” and “he said with a wink" way too distracting. I searched ‘wink’ and came up with 97 hits. It’s as if the characters all had nervous tics and something in their eyes. I do, however, appreciate the author’s attempt at addressing a social issue, but this book missed the mark for me.
  • Predictable and lacking depth

Read this book if you don't mind undeveloped characters based solely on good looks, endless professions of "you complete me" and "I love you so much it hurts", and an extremely predictable plot line.

The broken series was the such a great series I wish there were more coming out. This is second book I bought by Kelley Elliot and so far all her books are worth it.

  • Not for adults

If you're looking for quality writing for adults, look elsewhere. No character development at all, and poor novel construction. The sympathetic heroine made me want to punt her off a cliff, and the "hero" just...isn't. He smarmy and obnoxious and seems to have no honor. The time jumps with no actual detail of time and the entire story seems to be delivered with bad dialog as a way to advance the story forward. Note to self: always preview before you buy.
