Description

Memorizing answers is hard. Learning is easy! The Fast Track to Your Technician Ham Radio License explains the reasoning and technology behind each correct answer on the Amateur Radio exam so you'll understand and remember the subject matter. Created by an experienced ham and adult educator, it's like having your own, patient, experienced, good-humored mentor for the exam.

Technician is the entry-level ham radio license that lets you operate on all ham channels from 30 MHz up, which includes the very popular VHF and UHF bands. To get your license you must pass a multiple-choice test.

The Technician license test consists of 35 questions drawn from a pool of about 350. Memorizing the answers to over 400 questions is difficult, but The Fast Track makes getting your license easy by explaining the logic behind each correct answer, and by arranging the questions so they form a logical progression toward mastery of the material.

It's simple: When you understand the subjects, you remember the answers and pass the test.

Best of all, once you've passed your exam you'll have a solid grounding in ham radio basics.

Rave reviews for The Fast Track Ham License series:

"This is a great book. So many of the study guides are just question dumps and it's a horrible way to learn, at least for me. I need an explanation and something to keep my interest and Mr. Burnette's book fit the bill perfectly."

"Michael Burnette's ham radio exam prep book is the most useful and comprehensive book that I have found on this subject and makes getting ready for this exam not only easy, but fun. I have learned so much since studying this guide and fell ready to take this exam at a moment's notice."

"Thank you! Thank you a thousand times over. I bought your book in order to study for my tech license, and the audiobook and I loved them!"

"I have now purchased approx 8 books on this specific subject. Not to include wasted many months of 'trying to understand'. Yet, this being a topic in which I am passionate about, I can't seem to ever actually quit trying. I have spent years dabbling in the content trying to make good sense of it. Even had some formal training over the years.

After all of that *** This ended up being the only book I really needed for Technician!!!! The sad part, it was the last unique book in a stack I have purchased. Really wished I had tried this one 1st, maybe my review is useful to save you from a similar mistake like that. Start here, with Michael Burnette."

Michael Burnette, AF7KB, holds an Amateur Extra class license. He has decades of experience in commercial and amateur radio, and more decades of experience as a professional adult educator.

I note to the authors... Michael (AF7KB), I wanted to drop you a note of hearty thanks. See, about three or four weeks ago now, it suddenly occurred to me that I wanted a ham license. It started as a simple notion. I wanted to be able to use a “real” radio (something unlike the FRS radios we own) that might be beneficial to my wife and myself as we explore destinations in our RV. As we get slowly closer to retirement, the desire to see the country riding about in our small Winnebago with our two Dobermans becomes ever more desirable and fascinating. I wanted reliable communications for wherever our travels might take us. As you well know, cell phones don’t work everywhere and even if they did it takes a lot longer to use one than simply depressing a PTT button. If my wife ever needed me, in the middle of a trail someplace or wherever, I want to be able to know so I could get to her. Too, it occurred to me that having a radio or radios to travel the country with might simply be fun. I found your Fast Track to Technician book on the Apple bookstore. I began reading. I took your advice and scheduled myself for an exam near the end of the month (today as I write this). The audiobook quickly followed. You became my daily companion. I listened to you when I walked my dogs everyday and when I was driving. I read and highlighted your book every night. I encouraged my wife to take the challenge too – she did. The further I got in, I decided I wanted access to the HF bands too. I wanted to be able to talk around the world someday! Maybe a couple of weeks into this new passion I bought your book and audiobook for the General class. More study. You were with me, in one form or another, day and night. You encouraged me. Even though my head hurt at times you told me I could do it. I believed you. I kept going. There had always been a love for radio in me, you helped nurture it. Today, my wife and I took the exams in Lake in the Hills, IL. I was going for the Technician and General exams and my wife went for the Technician. I’m very pleased to say that we both passed our exams today! There’s two new hams in the world. The VEs even told me that I aced both of them! Zero wrong answers on both my exams. The world of ham radio is open to us now and the thanks goes to you! I found your books exceptional. I learned A LOT and now I have a license for learning so much more. My wife and I are both in our 50’s and I’m thinking this new hobby can easily keep me busy, God willing, for the next 25-30 years or so. Thanks again and maybe I’ll find you on the air someday.

  • Unusual style for learning

Burnette’s writing style is to present the test question, then provide the correct answer and brief explanation. My preference would be to provide information on the topic first, then give the test question. So many times I had to flip ahead to the discussion, then go back and answer the question. Perhaps that’s the best style to prepare for the test, but it occassionally left me flustered having to flip ahead, then back. There are a couple of questions with the wrong answer. The one I remember concerned the safety precautions when putting up an antenna. Michael, if you read the reviews, you might want to fix this answer. All in all, an easy read with enough information to make your head explode. Should I wait until I take the test until I pass judgement on the book? If I pass, I’ll come back and up my review to 5 stars.
